The storms caused walls, roofs, and trees to collapse, according to Quraishi Badloon, head of the department of information and culture for Nangarhar province. The dead and injured were taken to Nangarhar regional hospital and Fatima-tul-Zahra hospital.

"There is a possibility that casualties might rise," Badloon said.

Zabihullah Mujahid, a spokesman for the Islamic Emirate, said: "We share the grief of the families of the victims."

"The relevant institutions of the Islamic Emirate have been directed to go to the affected areas as soon as possible," Mujahid wrote on social media, adding they would provide shelter, food, and medicine to displaced families.

This tragedy comes after flash floods killed hundreds of people in Afghanistan in May. The country, where 80% of the population depends on farming, is particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change due to its poverty and reliance on agriculture. This year, Afghanistan has seen an unusually wet spring after an extremely dry winter. (ILKHA)
