Wildfires on Bulgaria-Türkiye border threaten villages in Edirne

Bulgaria is currently facing widespread wildfires across numerous districts, prompting a red alert in 21 out of its 28 regions. The fire, which began on Saturday, has intensified along the border, visible from villages like Büyükismailçe and Uzgaç in Edirne, exacerbated by prevailing winds.

Alexander Dzharov, Chief of Bulgaria's Fire Department, identified four particularly intense fire zones near the towns of Topolovgrad and Ivaylovgrad, close to the Turkish border. The blaze has already encroached upon residential areas in Bulgarian villages such as Srem and Madzharovo, resulting in the destruction of several homes.

In southwestern Turkey, temperatures have soared above 30°C (86°F) and spiked to 40°C (104°F) for extended periods over recent weeks, creating hot and dry conditions ideal for wildfires. Weather forecasts indicate no significant relief in temperatures over the next ten days, further complicating firefighting efforts.

Authorities on both sides of the border are actively engaged in firefighting operations and monitoring the situation closely to protect affected communities and mitigate further damage. (ILKHA)
