The increase follows the confirmation of seven additional deaths as heavy rains continue to wreak havoc in the region.

Officials from the Indian Disaster Management Unit have warned that the number of casualties may rise further due to the worsening conditions. The Indian Meteorological Department had previously issued a red alert for the northeastern states, anticipating severe natural disasters caused by the monsoon rains.

The monsoon season, which spans from June to September, regularly brings heavy rainfall to India, often resulting in significant damage and loss. This year, the storm and rain have caused the water level of the Brahmaputra River to rise, leading to widespread damage to agricultural crops and displacing thousands of people.

Authorities are continuing rescue and relief operations as they brace for further potential impacts from the ongoing monsoon rains. (ILKHA)
