Heavy rains kill at least 4 people in South Korea

The heavy downpours began Tuesday night and continued into Wednesday, primarily impacting western and southern regions. Local media reports indicate Eocheong Island off the west coast received a staggering 146 millimeters of rain per hour – a potential national record.

The city of Gunsan was hit particularly hard, witnessing 131 millimeters of rain in just one hour – nearly 10% of its average annual rainfall.

These relentless downpours caused widespread flooding, submerging homes and roads. Landslides and overflowing rivers further compounded the disaster.

Sadly, the heavy rains have resulted in the deaths of four individuals with search efforts ongoing for one missing person.

Local authorities in North Jeolla province reported 17 buildings and 16 roads submerged by floodwaters. With the danger of further flooding and landslides persisting, officials have urged residents to exercise caution. (ILKHA)
