Stoltenberg, ahead of a crucial meeting with President Joe Biden, accused China of fueling the largest armed conflict in Europe since World War II while attempting to maintain positive relations with the West. He argued that China's actions cannot go unanswered, emphasizing that allies must impose costs if Beijing continues its current course.

The NATO chief highlighted China's purported efforts to avoid sanctions and ensure uninterrupted trade by appearing neutral in the conflict, despite allegations of substantial support to Russia's defense sector.

Responding to China's denial of providing lethal assistance to either side, Stoltenberg pointed to recent moves by Beijing, including its absence from a summit in Switzerland led by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, as indicative of its strategic positioning.

Stoltenberg's visit to Washington aims to rally support for Ukraine amidst internal US political debates, including skepticism from figures like former President Donald Trump. He stressed the need for sustained military assistance to Ukraine, arguing that increasing weaponry could expedite a resolution to the conflict.
