Dozens dead, many missing after migrant boat sinks off Yemen
At least 38 migrants from the Horn of Africa are confirmed dead after their vessel capsized in strong winds off the coast of Yemen.
Survivors from the overcrowded boat, which was carrying around 250 people, reported the incident to rescuers. Yemeni authorities estimate nearly 100 migrants remain missing.
The boat, carrying mostly Ethiopians seeking passage to Gulf countries, went down before reaching the shores, according to local sources.
Local fishermen and residents were able to rescue 78 migrants, but many others are unaccounted for. The United Nations has been notified of the incident and a search operation is ongoing.
This tragedy highlights the ongoing dangers faced by migrants attempting perilous journeys at sea, despite the ongoing war in Yemen and Houthi attacks in the Red Sea. According to the UN, nearly 100,000 migrants arrived in Yemen from the Horn of Africa last year alone. (ILKHA)
