Biden proposes ceasefire in Gaza in exchange for release of Israeli captives

This initiative, he asserts, is the most effective step toward ending hostilities and ensuring that humanitarian aid reaches those in need.

"As someone who's had a lifelong commitment to Israel, as the only American president who has ever gone to Israel at a time of war, as someone who just sent U.S. forces to directly defend Israel when it was attacked by Iran, I ask you to take a step back and consider what will happen if this moment is lost," Biden urged. "We can't lose this moment."

Biden's Three-Phase Plan for Gaza Ceasefire

The proposal is structured into three distinct phases designed to ensure a comprehensive and sustainable resolution to the conflict:

Phase One:

- A six-week ceasefire would be initiated, during which Israeli forces would withdraw from Gaza.

- In return, Israeli captives, including the elderly and women, would be exchanged for hundreds of Palestinian detainees.

- Palestinian civilians displaced from northern Gaza would be allowed to return home.

- Humanitarian aid would be delivered via 600 trucks daily, ensuring crucial supplies reach affected areas.

Phase Two:

- Negotiations between Hamas and Israel would commence to establish the terms for a permanent cessation of hostilities.

- The ceasefire would be maintained throughout these talks to provide a stable environment for dialogue.

Phase Three:

- A comprehensive reconstruction plan for Gaza would be launched. Qatar has already communicated this proposal to Hamas, according to Biden.

Biden emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, "It's time for this war to end and for the day after to begin." His call to action comes at a critical juncture, as the conflict, now in its eighth month, continues amid the pressures of an election year.

Despite the potential benefits, Biden's proposal has faced opposition within Israel, particularly from members of the government coalition who favor an indefinite continuation of the war. These factions prioritize the occupation of Gaza over the release of Israeli captives.

"I know there are those in Israel who will not agree with this plan and will call for the war to continue indefinitely. Some are even in the government coalition. They've made it clear they want to occupy Gaza and keep fighting for years, and hostages are not a priority for them. Well, I've urged leadership in Israel to stand behind this deal, despite whatever pressure comes," Biden stated. (ILKHA)
