UN Secretary-General condemns Israeli strike on Rafah, calls for end to genocide
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has condemned an Israeli airstrike on Gaza’s southern city of Rafah, which killed numerous civilians seeking shelter.
"Scores of innocent civilians who were only seeking shelter from this deadly conflict were killed," Guterres stated on Monday. "There is no safe place in Gaza. This horror must stop," he added in a social media post.
The airstrike has provoked a wave of international condemnation. Gaza officials reported that the attack killed 45 people, igniting a fire that devastated a tent city housing displaced Palestinians.
The situation in Gaza has grown increasingly tense following the launch of an Israeli ground operation in Rafah earlier this month. Heightening the tension, the Israeli and Egyptian militaries reported a “shooting incident” on Monday that resulted in the death of an Egyptian guard in the border area between Egypt and southern Gaza. Both forces have stated that they are investigating the incident.
The ongoing genocide continues to draw international attention and calls for an immediate cessation of aggression. (ILKHA)
