HÜDA PAR Chairman marks 64th anniversary of Türkiye's first coup
On the 64th anniversary of the May 27, 1960 coup, HUDA PAR Chairman Zekeriya Yapıcıoğlu issued a statement condemning the coup as an attack on the Turkish people's beliefs and their right to self-governance.
The May 27 coup, the first military coup in the history of the Republic of Türkiye, was executed by a group of 37 low-ranking officers under the command of Major General Cemal Madanoğlu, acting outside the chain of command. The officers justified their actions by accusing the ruling Democrat Party, which had been in power since 1950, of steering the country towards oppression and internal conflict.
In a statement on X, Yapıcıoğlu highlighted the enduring impact of the coup, which led to the execution of Prime Minister Adnan Menderes and two of his ministers. He emphasized the broader implications of the event for Türkiye's political landscape.
"27 May, which those who defend the Junta Republic against the Republic of the People still call a 'revolution' and once celebrated as a holiday, is a coup. This coup d'état was carried out against both the people's belief and their right to self-government. The coup of May 27th is the mother of all subsequent coups," Yapıcıoğlu stated.
He further commemorated Adnan Menderes, the then-Prime Minister, and his colleagues who were executed following the event.
The May 27, 1960 coup marked a significant turning point in Turkish history, setting a precedent for military intervention in politics and reshaping the nation's governance. (ILKHA)
