Kenya: Tragic bus accident in Nairobi claims nine lives, injures seventeen

The Naboka Sacco bus reportedly veered off the road and plunged into the river, with authorities confirming six deaths at the scene and the remaining casualties succumbing to injuries at various hospitals.

According to preliminary investigations, the driver lost control of the vehicle.

The Kenya Red Cross was among the first responders, attending to another accident near Hardy Police Station in Karen where a minibus lost control and overturned, injuring 13 people.

This tragic incident highlights the ongoing dangers on Nairobi's roads. Data from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) reveals 176 road crash deaths in Nairobi between January and April 2024.

Kangundo, Mombasa, and Outering roads were identified as the deadliest, with 12 fatalities each, followed by Waiyaki Way with 10 deaths. The Eastern Bypass, Juja, and Ngong roads each recorded seven fatalities during the same period.

Pedestrians were the most vulnerable group, accounting for 89 deaths, followed by motorcyclists at 34. Passengers were not spared, with at least 20 losing their lives. Drivers and pillion passengers each accounted for 12 fatalities, and nine pedal cyclists also perished in road accidents during the first four months of 2024. (ILKHA)
