Faryab Governorate spokesperson Ismetullah Muradi confirmed the rising death toll to Kabul-based Tolo News. The recent floods in Faryab claimed 18 lives, adding to the hundreds who perished in the northern provinces during the previous weeks.

Muradi also reported significant damage to infrastructure and agriculture. Over 2,000 hectares of farmland were destroyed, more than 1,000 houses were damaged, and over 300 animals were lost.

Earlier reports indicated at least 50 deaths and missing people in Ghor province due to similar flooding.

Heavy Rains Cause Havoc Across Afghanistan

The northern provinces of Baghlan, Badakhshan, and Takhar were severely affected by flash floods last week, resulting in substantial losses of life and property.

Melting winter snow caused by rising temperatures, combined with heavy rainfall and insufficient infrastructure, are major factors contributing to the devastating floods in Afghanistan.

Authorities reported 315 deaths and over 1,600 injuries from flash floods that ravaged northern villages last week. A separate incident involving a helicopter crash during rescue efforts in Ghor province claimed one life and injured 12.

Vulnerable Nation Faces Challenges

Afghanistan is highly susceptible to natural disasters and is considered by the United Nations as one of the countries most at risk from climate change.

The country faces a shortage of aid following the Taliban takeover in 2021. The withdrawal of foreign forces led to a significant reduction in development aid, which previously formed a crucial part of Afghanistan's financial resources. (ILKHA)
