Khartoum imposes curfew amid security concerns

The curfew restricts movement of people and vehicles from 11:00 PM to 5:00 AM and bans all commercial activity and pedestrian traffic from 10:00 PM to 5:00 AM.

The curfew, enacted by Acting Governor Ahmed Osman Hamza, applies only to areas currently under government control, specifically Omdurman and Karari localities. Authorities justify the measure as necessary to protect citizens.

Security experts, however, express concern that the curfew is inadequate to address the significant security threats facing the country. They urge a more comprehensive security strategy.

The curfew follows a state of emergency declared earlier in May, targeting foreign presence and establishing a security committee. This recent development highlights the ongoing tensions in Sudan.

Those who violate the curfew risk vehicle confiscation, arrest, and potential searches of their property. Penalties include imprisonment up to six months or fines, with repeat offenses incurring doubled punishment. (ILKHA)
