Government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura announced on Wednesday evening that 14 adults and five children perished due to floods within the past 24 hours. The total number affected by the heavy rains has reached 293,661, displacing 54,837 families.

Mwaura also reported 188 injuries and significant infrastructure damage, including severely affected railway lines and impassable roads.

The Kenyan government is mobilizing nearly 4 billion Kenyan shillings to support recovery and relief efforts. Mwaura emphasized the government's commitment to protecting the lives and property of Kenyans impacted by the floods.

Heavy rains have also caused substantial disruptions to healthcare services, with 61 health facilities compromised across 11 counties. As a consequence, 44 cholera cases have been reported in Tana River and Marsabit counties.

The Ministry of Health and Red Cross officials are collaborating to contain the spread of the cholera outbreak through outreach programs.

"The government is actively implementing waterborne disease control measures, including efforts to manage cholera outbreaks," said Mwaura.

Repair works on damaged infrastructure are underway and expected to continue until the end of May. (ILKHA)
