Compared to the same period in 2023, tourism income rose by a significant 5.4%, reaching a total of $8.78 billion. This growth indicates a strong start to the year for Turkish tourism, suggesting a potential rebound from any pandemic-related setbacks.

The number of departing visitors to Türkiye witnessed a healthy increase of 10.1%, reaching over 9 million. Notably, more than 2 million of these visitors were Turkish citizens residing abroad. This suggests a growing trend of expatriate Turks returning to visit family and friends, or explore their heritage.

An interesting trend emerged in tourist spending habits. Individual expenditures, where tourists plan their own itineraries and book accommodations independently, constituted the lion's share (70%) of total tourism income. This indicates a growing number of tourists seeking customized travel experiences. However, package tours, which offer pre-planned itineraries, also saw an increase (11.5%) compared to Q1 2023, suggesting their continued appeal for some travelers.

When it comes to how tourists spend their money, food and beverages continue to reign supreme, accounting for 22.6% of total tourism expenditure. This highlights the importance of a strong culinary scene for attracting tourists to Türkiye. Following closely behind was spending on international transport (16.7%), reflecting the travel costs incurred by tourists to reach Türkiye.

Nearly half (46%) of visitors came to Türkiye for leisure purposes, seeking experiences like travel, entertainment, sports, and cultural activities. This highlights the growing popularity of Türkiye as a destination for relaxation, adventure, and cultural immersion.

The good news extends to Turkish citizens themselves. The number of Turkish citizens traveling abroad for leisure or visiting loved ones also saw a significant rise of 18.4%, reaching over 2.4 million.  The average expenditure per Turkish traveler was $727, showcasing their spending power abroad.

Overall, the Q1 2024 tourism report paints a promising picture for Türkiye's tourism industry. The sector appears to be on a growth trajectory, attracting more visitors, generating higher revenue, and witnessing a diversification in tourist demographics and spending patterns.
