Türkiye rejects French National Assembly resolution on Assyrians and Chaldeans
The Turkish Foreign Ministry has strongly condemned a resolution passed by the French National Assembly on April 29, 2024, regarding the Assyrians and Chaldeans.
The ministry called the resolution "null and void," criticizing it for making "unfounded accusations" about Ottoman history. This follows a similar resolution adopted by the French Senate last year, which the French government distanced itself from.
Ankara argues that parliaments lack the authority to interpret history and that such pronouncements are politically motivated distortions. They further emphasized that only competent courts, not legislative bodies, can determine issues related to genocide, citing the 1948 UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.
