Dam collapse in Kenya kills 42 amidst widespread flooding

Early Monday morning, the Old Kijabe Dam in the Mai Mahiu area breached, sending a torrent of water through homes and severing a major road. Local authorities say the dam is located in a region susceptible to flash floods.

The incident comes as Kenya grapples with severe flooding triggered by heavy rains since mid-March. Nearly 100 people have already lost their lives, and school openings have been delayed. The Meteorological Department warns of continued rainfall.

Kenya is not alone in its struggles. The East African region faces widespread flooding, with reported deaths of 155 in Tanzania and over 200,000 people affected in neighboring Burundi.

Flooding has reached Kenya's main airport, forcing flight diversions. Videos circulating online show submerged runways, terminals, and cargo sections.

Over 200,000 Kenyans have been impacted by the floods. Homes in flood-prone areas are underwater, and people have sought refuge in schools.

President William Ruto has directed the National Youth Service to offer land for temporary camps to house those displaced by the flooding. (ILKHA)
