The assault occurred during the morning hours of April 17, with explosions shaking the northern Ukrainian city around 9 a.m. local time, as reported by the Suspline media outlet.

Among the victims was a 25-year-old female police lieutenant who tragically lost her life while on sick leave at her home, struck by shrapnel from the attack, according to Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed deep sorrow and frustration, stating on Telegram: "This would not have happened if Ukraine had received enough air defense equipment and if the world's determination to counter Russian terror was also sufficient."

Chernihiv Oblast Governor Viacheslav Chaus confirmed that three Russian missiles struck near the city's downtown area, causing significant damage to civilian and social infrastructure facilities, as noted by acting Mayor Oleksandr Lomako.

The aftermath of the attack saw an eight-story building destroyed, along with damage to four high-rise structures, a hospital, a higher education institution, and numerous vehicles, as detailed by Oleksii Kuleba, a deputy head of Ukraine's Presidential Office.

Rescue operations are ongoing, with the possibility of additional casualties as the situation unfolds. Interior Minister Klymenko stated that at least three individuals are currently considered missing.

President Zelensky emphasized the importance of international support in combating terrorism, stressing the need for partners to stand firmly alongside Ukraine in its defense efforts.

The attack on Chernihiv comes amidst ongoing challenges for Ukraine's air defense capabilities, exacerbated by delays in U.S. military aid funding. Meanwhile, Russia's aggressive tactics have targeted Ukraine's energy infrastructure, further straining the nation's defenses.

Chernihiv Oblast, situated on Ukraine's northern border with Russia, has been subjected to frequent attacks since the onset of Russia's full-scale war in February 2022, despite Russian forces withdrawing from the region in April of the same year. (ILKHA)
