Türkiye's inflation remains high despite signs of slowdown
Türkiye's annual inflation rate dipped slightly in March 2024, reaching 68.50% according to the Turkish Statistical Institute (TURKSTAT).
This represents a decrease from December 2023's figure of 64.27%, but still reflects a significantly high cost of living.
However, there are some tentative signs of improvement. The monthly inflation rate in March was 3.16%, a slowdown compared to January's 6.70%.
The education sector continues to see the steepest price increases, with a staggering 104.07% annual inflation rate. Conversely, the clothing and footwear sector showed the lowest increase at 50.10%.
The news is not all bad. Alcoholic beverages and tobacco even saw a slight monthly decrease in price (-0.02%).
TURKSTAT also reported a similar trend for the core inflation rate, which excludes volatile categories like food and energy. The core inflation rate reached 71.89% annually in March, with a monthly increase of 3.14%.
While these figures suggest a potential slowdown in inflation, Turkey's economic situation remains challenging for citizens facing rising costs. (ILKHA)
