UNRWA raises alarm on Gaza and West Bank situation amid ongoing conflict
UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency) has released a situation report detailing the ongoing crisis in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem.
The report highlights the continued military operations by Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) across the Gaza Strip, leading to civilian casualties, displacement, and destruction of civilian infrastructure.
The report notes ongoing airstrikes and bombardments in north Gaza, Khan Younis, and Rafah, where approximately 1.2 million people are currently residing, many in formal and informal shelters. Access impediments persist, severely affecting humanitarian actors' ability to reach those in need. Israeli authorities have denied 30% of humanitarian aid missions to northern Gaza since March 1st, disproportionately impacting UNRWA's efforts to deliver emergency food assistance.
Despite ongoing challenges, there has been no significant improvement in humanitarian access or the volume of supplies entering Gaza. The average daily entry of aid trucks stands at 159, well below the operational capacity and the target of 500 trucks per day. UNRWA remains a crucial humanitarian organization in Gaza, having provided essential assistance to over 1.8 million people with flour, emergency food parcels to nearly 600,000 individuals, and over 3.6 million patient consultations at health centers and points.
Tragically, the report highlights the toll on UNRWA personnel, with 173 colleagues killed since the start of hostilities. Moreover, up to 1.7 million people, over 75% of the population, have been displaced across the Gaza Strip, with families forced to move repeatedly in search of safety. Following intense bombardments and fighting in Khan Younis and the Middle Area, a significant number of displaced individuals have been compelled to relocate further south. (ILKHA)
