Ukraine's Zelensky warns of retreat without US military aid

In an interview with the Washington Post, Zelensky said the lack of certainty regarding future weapons deliveries is hindering Ukraine's ability to plan counteroffensives. He emphasized the urgency of additional support, stating, "If you are not taking steps forward to prepare another counteroffensive, Russia will take them."

This warning comes after a failed Ukrainian counteroffensive last year and Russia's capture of Avdiivka in February. The loss forced Ukrainian troops to retreat and establish new defensive lines.

"We are trying to find some way not to retreat," Zelensky said, acknowledging the stabilizing efforts by Ukrainian military leaders. However, he stressed the critical role of US aid, particularly air defense systems, ammunition, and long-range missiles.

"If there is no U.S. support, it means that we have no air defense...no 155mm artillery rounds," Zelensky said. "It means we will go back, retreat, step by step, in small steps."

Zelensky specifically requested access to ATACMS missiles, a long-range weapon system that could potentially target Russian airfields in Crimea, where bombers launching attacks on Ukrainian soil are stationed. The US delivered a limited number of older-model ATACMS to Ukraine in October 2023, but Zelensky urged the provision of newer versions with a longer range.

"When Russia knows we can destroy these jets, they will not attack from Crimea," Zelensky argued.

The President also criticized political gridlock in Washington, urging US lawmakers to prioritize Ukraine's fight. "We can't waste time anymore," he said. "Ukraine can't be a political issue between the parties." (ILKHA)
