The Islamic State has claimed responsibility, releasing footage from the attackers, identified as Tajikistani citizens. Analysts believe President Putin might use this attack, which killed 137 people, as justification for further escalation in Ukraine.

This follows two recent attacks on Kyiv: a missile barrage on Thursday, the first in six weeks, and a large-scale assault on Ukraine's energy sector on Friday, which Russia claims was retaliation for strikes on its territory.
