UN Security Council passes resolution for immediate ceasefire in Gaza

Despite widespread support for the ceasefire resolution, the Council failed to pass an amendment proposed by Russia, which aimed to establish a permanent ceasefire in the region.

The resolution, initiated by the 10 non-permanent members of the Security Council, emphasizes the necessity of an immediate ceasefire during the month of Ramadan. It also demands the unconditional release of hostages and urges the urgent expansion of humanitarian aid flow into Gaza.

The United States, having previously vetoed three UNSC resolutions advocating for a ceasefire in Gaza, refrained from casting a vote on the latest resolution. Notably, two of the previous resolutions vetoed by the US had also called for an immediate ceasefire.

Israel's ongoing military campaign in Gaza, which began on October 7 last year, has resulted in a devastating toll on the Palestinian population. Over 32,000 individuals have been killed, and more than 74,000 others have been injured as a result of the conflict. (ILKHA)
