Portugal heads to the polls in early election amid political shift

The latest opinion polls, published on Friday, indicate a tight race between the centre-right Democratic Alliance (AD) and the Socialist Party (PS). However, neither party is projected to secure an outright majority in parliament. This scenario opens the door for the far-right party Chega to play a pivotal role in forming a governing coalition.

Despite being Portugal’s second election in two years, the outcome remains uncertain due to a substantial number of undecided voters.

Polling stations across the nation, which has a population of approximately 10 million people, opened at 8:00 am (0800 GMT). Exit poll projections are expected at 8:00 pm.

The election was triggered by the unexpected resignation of Socialist Prime Minister Antonio Costa in November amidst an influence-peddling probe. While Costa's government achieved economic growth and improved public finances, criticism persists regarding unresolved issues such as healthcare, education, and housing.

As Portugal heads to the polls, the outcome of the election will not only shape the country's political landscape but also have implications for broader trends in European politics. (ILKHA)
