The resolution, which was presented by the UK, garnered 14 votes with only Russia abstaining.

However, Russia's Deputy Representative, Anna Evstigneeva, cast doubt on the intentions of Western countries. She accused them of "double standards" for not taking similar action regarding the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Evstigneeva emphasized the need for diplomatic solutions in Sudan.

The resolution itself calls for an urgent halt to fighting throughout Ramadan and encourages dialogue towards a lasting solution. Additionally, it demands full access for humanitarian aid workers and urges all parties involved to uphold international humanitarian law.

Sudan has been embroiled in a violent conflict since April 2023 between the military, led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. UN estimates suggest over 12,000 fatalities and 33,000 injuries. Nearly 6.8 million people have been displaced within Sudan or fled to neighboring countries.

This ceasefire represents another attempt to end the bloodshed. Previous attempts mediated by Saudi Arabia and the US have proven unsuccessful. (ILKHA)
