Expressing deep concern over persistent attacks on religious, racial, and ethnic minorities, as well as women and girls, the experts cautioned that the situation could deteriorate further in the lead-up to national elections.

The experts cited numerous reports of violence and hate crimes against minorities, dehumanizing rhetoric, targeted killings, vigilante violence, forced demolitions of minority homes, enforced disappearances, and harassment of human rights defenders and journalists. They also highlighted the misuse of official agencies against perceived political opponents and arbitrary displacement due to development projects.

Calling on India to fully implement its human rights obligations and reverse the erosion of rights, the experts lamented the inadequate response from the Indian government to their communications. They noted a low level of response to communications, with a significant number of cases pending, and regretted the absence of country visits since 2017 despite standing invitations.

The experts urged India to take concrete measures to address concerns raised in previous reports and communications. They called on the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to continue monitoring the evolving human rights situation in India and urged the Human Rights Council to consider measures to prevent further violations in line with its mandate.

In light of ongoing reports of violence and attacks against minorities, the experts emphasized the urgent need for a conducive atmosphere for free and fair elections, urging authorities to respond effectively to concerns raised. (ILKHA)
