Deputy Information Minister Abdirahman Yusuf Al Adala stated that the operation, ongoing since Saturday, has also resulted in the capture of 20 militants. The offensive, targeting areas including Muse-Haji, Malaylay, Turdho, and Baxar-saafka, marks the fourth consecutive day of military action against the extremist group.

This latest offensive builds upon recent gains made by the Somali government in its fight against Al-Shabaab, particularly in central Somalia. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud declared "total war" on the group earlier this year, aiming to reclaim territories under their control and prevent further attacks.

Somalia has witnessed a recent rise in deadly attacks by Al-Shabaab targeting both military and civilian targets. The situation is further complicated by the planned withdrawal of the African Union peacekeeping force from Somalia by the end of 2024, placing increased responsibility on the Somali government to ensure security.

In a separate development, Somalia and the United States signed a Memorandum of Understanding last month for the construction of up to five military bases for the Somali army's Danab Brigade. Additionally, Somalia's Interior Minister held talks with a high-level delegation from India, discussing cooperation on various issues, including security and development projects. (ILKHA)
