Şimşek: Türkiye's economy surpasses expectations with 4.5% growth in 2023
Treasury and Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek expressed optimism regarding Türkiye's economic trajectory, citing indicators pointing to ongoing rebalancing and improvements in the current account deficit.
In a social media post, Şimşek evaluated the 2023 growth figures, highlighting significant achievements. According to the latest GDP data, Türkiye's economy expanded by 4% annually in the final quarter of 2023, surpassing expectations set by the Medium-Term Program, with a growth rate of 4.5% for the full year.
Şimşek emphasized that the country's national income exceeded $1.1 trillion, with per capita income reaching $13,110, reflecting a $2,450 increase compared to the previous year.
He noted a notable shift in growth dynamics, with domestic demand contributing less and net external demand playing a reduced negative role. A significant portion of the growth in 2023 stemmed from increased investments in machinery and equipment, enhancing productive capacity and fostering higher quality growth.
Şimşek anticipates a moderate, balanced growth in 2024, with positive contributions from net external demand. He emphasized that the improved growth composition resulting from government policies will aid in the disinflation process.
To ensure sustained welfare increases, Şimşek reiterated the government's commitment to implementing structural reforms aimed at promoting high-value-added production and enhancing productivity, while maintaining price stability.
The Minister's remarks reflect a sense of cautious optimism regarding Türkiye's economic outlook, underlining the government's commitment to fostering sustainable growth and stability through strategic reforms. (ILKHA)
