The incident comes amid ongoing tensions between Türkiye and Greece regarding irregular migration across the Aegean Sea.

Turkish authorities responded to reports of several rubber boats carrying migrants in distress off the Aegean coastline. Coast Guard teams deployed to the locations and safely rescued a total of 68 individuals, with 21 being identified as minors. The presence of children among the migrants underscores the potential risks and vulnerabilities associated with irregular migration routes.

In addition to the rescue operations, Turkish authorities apprehended a separate group of 18 irregular migrants, including one child, who were found in rubber boats within the same provinces. These individuals will also undergo processing by relevant authorities.

The Turkish Coast Guard statement alleges that the rescued migrants were previously pushed back by Greek elements. Türkiye has consistently accused Greece of engaging in illegal practices of pushing back migrants attempting to reach European shores, violating international law and humanitarian principles. Greece has denied these allegations, maintaining that they uphold their obligations under international law.

This latest incident contributes to the strained relations between Türkiye and Greece on the issue of irregular migration. Both countries remain locked in a disagreement over maritime borders and migration management responsibilities in the Aegean Sea.

The situation in the Aegean highlights the complex challenges associated with irregular migration and the need for collaborative solutions. The presence of vulnerable individuals, including children, further emphasizes the humanitarian dimension of this issue. Finding sustainable and humane solutions to address the root causes of irregular migration and ensuring the safety and well-being of migrants remain critical priorities for the international community.
