Turkish authorities debunk cyanide contamination claims after gold mine landslide
Türkiye's Presidency has refuted claims of widespread cyanide contamination in the Euphrates River following a landslide at a gold mine in Erzincan province.
The Centre for Combating Disinformation clarified that images circulating online purporting to show cyanide contamination actually depict the gold mine's waste pond, not the river or any dam.
Authorities assured the public that immediate measures were implemented after the landslide. The Ministry of Environment, Urbanisation and Climate Change dispatched teams to the affected area and promptly sealed the covers of a culvert connecting a nearby stream to the Euphrates, effectively preventing potential soil contamination of the river.
The Presidency emphasized its commitment to transparency and combating the spread of misinformation. They urged the public to rely solely on official sources for accurate information regarding the incident.
While the full environmental impact of the landslide remains under investigation, authorities stressed the importance of relying on verified information and avoiding the spread of unconfirmed claims. (ILKHA)
