Armed attack injures woman during AK Party campaign in Istanbul
An armed attack during a mayoral election campaign event for the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) in Istanbul left a woman injured on Saturday.
Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya confirmed the incident, which occurred in Istanbul’s Kucukcekmece district.
According to Yerlikaya’s statement on social media platform X, an investigation has been launched into the attack. The assailants reportedly used long-barreled guns and pistols, but their identities and motives remain undisclosed.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan swiftly condemned the violent act on X (previously known as Twitter), emphasizing that no attack on democracy, unity, or solidarity would succeed.
As the nation prepares for the mayoral elections scheduled for March 31, authorities are closely monitoring the situation and working to ensure the safety of citizens during the campaign period. (ILKHA)
