Türkiye reports decline in livestock numbers, mixed agricultural trends

The number of bovine animals in Türkiye has decreased by 2.6% compared to the previous year, with cattle and buffalo populations both experiencing declines. Additionally, the population of sheep and goats also saw a decrease of 6.9%.

The Turkish Statistical Institute (TSI) released data indicating a 2.6% decrease in the number of bovine animals in Turkey compared to the previous year, totaling 16 million 583 thousand heads. Within this group, the cattle population declined by 2.6% to 16 million 421 thousand heads, while the number of buffalo decreased by 5.9% to 161 thousand 749 heads.

Similarly, the population of sheep and goats decreased by 6.9% compared to the previous year, amounting to 52 million 363 thousand heads. Within this category, sheep numbers declined by 5.9% to 42 million 60 thousand heads, while goat populations decreased by 11.0% to 10 million 303 thousand heads.

Meanwhile, honey production in 2023 witnessed a 2.9% decrease compared to the previous year, totaling 114 thousand 886 tons. The number of egg boxes opened also saw a decline of 3.9%, reaching 5 thousand 360 units.

However, there was a positive development in silkworm cocoon production, which increased by 14.1% to 78 tons, indicating a potential boost in the silk industry.

The TSI's report provides valuable insights into the dynamics of livestock populations and agricultural production in Turkey, highlighting areas of decline and growth in the sector. (ILKHA)
