In light of this commemoration, Turkish schoolchildren in several affected provinces were granted exemption from classes on Tuesday, recognizing the profound impact of the natural disaster on local communities.

Many survivors of the earthquake now reside in Umut Kent, a container city located in Kahramanmaras.

Local mental health support workers, speaking to Sputnik, revealed that families continue to seek their guidance as they grapple with anxieties stemming from the earthquakes and the loss of loved ones.

Additionally, concerns regarding challenges associated with container living, familial issues, unemployment, and other difficulties arising from their new circumstances are frequently expressed.

The earthquake, which struck a year ago, left thousands trapped under collapsed residential structures, enduring harsh freezing conditions.

Just nine hours later, the region was struck by another earthquake measuring 7.6 magnitude, compounding the shock and devastation experienced by survivors.

The total damage inflicted by these catastrophic earthquakes surpassed $105 billion, with approximately 300,000 buildings across 11 provinces either destroyed or severely damaged.

Despite the passage of a year, Turkish authorities continue their investigation into the contractors responsible for the collapsed buildings.

Some of these contractors have fled abroad in an attempt to evade trial, with many maintaining that the structures were constructed in accordance with all regulations. (ILKHA)
