UN urges de-escalation in Middle East as tensions rise following Gaza genocide

The meeting, requested by Russia, aimed to avert further escalation and potential regional instability.

Rosemary DiCarlo, UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs, warned the Council that escalating attacks across the region increased the risk of miscalculation and conflict.

She highlighted Secretary-General Guterres' repeated warnings about the danger of escalating violence following the israeli aggression on Gaza that began on October 7th.

"We have witnessed near daily incidents in the region," DiCarlo reported, citing over 165 attacks on US facilities in Syria and Iraq, leading to US airstrikes in both countries. Additionally, a drone attack in Jordan killed three US service members, prompting further US strikes against resistance groups.

While the US denied seeking conflict, both Syria and Iraq condemned the strikes and reported civilian casualties. (ILKHA)
