Strong earthquake shakes western Brazil, no initial reports of damage

An earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale struck western Acre state, Brazil, on Sunday morning, causing light shaking but no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

The temblor, which occurred at approximately 5:38 AM local time, had its epicenter about 66 kilometers west-southwest of Tarauaca, at a depth of 609 kilometers. This depth likely contributed to the minimal impact on the surface.

Residents in western Acre and parts of neighboring Amazonas state in Brazil, as well as eastern Ucayali and northern Madre de Dios regions in Peru, may have felt light shaking.

Authorities are still assessing the situation, particularly in remote areas, where aftershocks are expected for the next few days. (ILKHA)
