The decision signifies a major step forward for NATO expansion, which began earlier in 2022 when both Sweden and Finland abandoned their long-held neutrality in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

While Finland's bid was quickly approved, Turkey raised concerns regarding Sweden's perceived support for Kurdish groups Ankara considers terrorist organizations.

Following months of diplomatic wrangling, including President Erdogan's demands for the extradition of alleged PKK members from Sweden, Ankara ultimately gave its seal of approval.

This paves the way for Hungary, whose leader Viktor Orban has already extended an invitation to discuss the process with his Swedish counterpart. (ILKHA)
