The Executive Director of the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women), Sima Bahous, has brought attention to a dire situation in the Gaza Strip, revealing that "two mothers are killed every hour" amid the ongoing Israeli war.
Bahous expressed deep concern over the impact of the conflict on women and children, emphasizing that they are the primary victims of the tragedy. She noted that Gaza has witnessed unprecedented destruction during the 100 days of Israeli aggression, with women and girls constituting the majority of casualties, injuries, and displaced individuals.
Comparing statistics before and after October 7, 2023, Bahous pointed out a significant shift in the demographics of victims. Previously, 67% were men, while less than 14% were women and girls. However, current figures reveal a stark reversal, with 70% of victims in Gaza now being women and children.
UN Secretary-General spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric echoed concerns about the plight of women and girls in Gaza, emphasizing their catastrophic humanitarian needs. Approximately 3,000 women have lost their husbands, making them sole providers for their families.
Dujarric emphasized that 70% of those killed in Gaza are women and children, with over 90% of displaced individuals being children. UNICEF spokesperson Tess Ingram, who recently visited Gaza, shared firsthand observations of mothers bleeding to death and nurses forced to perform cesarean sections for deceased pregnant women.
Ingram revealed that around 20,000 children were born in the midst of the conflict, emphasizing the urgent need for international action to address the humanitarian crisis. (ILKHA)
