Zimbabwe: All 15 trapped miners rescued from collapsed gold mine

The incident occurred on Thursday at the Redwing Mine, operated by the Metallon Corporation in the Penhalonga area of Manicaland.

The miners had been trapped underground after a mineshaft collapsed, prompting swift action from the government, which collaborated with mining experts from Metallon Corporation and Fredda Rebbeca Gold Mine in the rescue efforts.

"All came out alive," said Zimbabwe's Mines Minister, Soda Zhemu, confirming the successful rescue.

Government spokesperson Nick Mangwana also provided assurance, saying: "I can confirm all 15 miners have been rescued."

Expressing concern for the miners' lives, a local NGO, the Centre for Research and Development, had issued a statement following the incident.

The Redwing Mine, owned by Pedzisai Scott Sakupwanya, a ZANU-PF parliamentarian for the Mabvuku-Tafara constituency in Harare, had faced a similar incident last January. At that time, twenty-six people were reported killed in collapsed shafts at the same mine.

The recent successful rescue marks a crucial development in the ongoing efforts to ensure the safety of miners in the region. (ILKHA)
