Serbian police confirmed on Monday that they have apprehended at least 38 individuals who participated in a demonstration against alleged widespread irregularities in the recent general elections. The elections declared the governing populists as the winners of parliamentary and local councils' elections.
The opposition group, Serbia Against Violence, has been actively protesting since the December 17 elections, asserting claims of election fraud, particularly in the capital, Belgrade. Some politicians within the opposition have resorted to a hunger strike to emphasize their demands.
On Sunday evening, hundreds of protesters attempted to enter Belgrade's city council, breaking windows in the process. Riot police responded by using tear gas, pepper spray, and batons to disperse the crowd and prevent the entry.
Senior police official Ivica Ivkovic informed reporters that the detained individuals are facing charges related to inciting a violent change of constitutional order, implying an attempt to overthrow the government, along with charges of violent behavior. He added that eight police officers were injured, some of them seriously.
The opposition countered, accusing the police of using excessive force and alleging mistreatment of their supporters.
In response to these events, several hundred university students and citizens blocked traffic on a major Belgrade street that houses government headquarters on Monday. Despite a police warning against blockades, no incidents were reported, with some students engaging in sports activities on the street.
"Police are ready and capable of countering any acts of violence with determination," Ivkovic stated, emphasizing the authorities' commitment to maintaining order in the face of ongoing protests. (ILKHA)
