The quake occurred at 23.53 local time (2053 GMT) and its epicenter was located 11.18 kilometers  below the surface near the Çınarcık district, according to the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD).

The tremor was felt in the neighboring provinces of Bursa, Kocaeli and Istanbul as well, prompting some people to rush out of their homes.

AFAD said that there were no reports of casualties or damage to buildings, and that the situation was under control.

Turkey is prone to earthquakes due to its location on major seismic fault lines. In February 6th, a powerful 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck the Mediterranean province of Kahramanmaraş, killing more than 50,000 people. (ILKHA)
