Salim Oweis, a UNICEF official, emphasized that beyond the statistics, these figures represent the tragic loss of lives, dreams, and futures due to the relentless crisis in the Gaza Strip.

In an interview with UN News, Oweis underscored the severity of the situation faced by the children in Gaza, asserting that they are enduring the gravest consequences amidst the ongoing conflict. He reiterated the urgent need for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire to address the dire situation.

"The heaviest price, as we saw, children really are paying the heaviest price for this conflict and its escalation. So far, over 3,500 Palestinian children have been killed and over 6,800 have been injured, with varying degrees of injuries," Oweis stated.

He emphasized the significance of recognizing these figures as more than mere numbers, as they represent the shattered dreams and futures of numerous children. Oweis stressed that these casualties should not be perceived as a normal occurrence.

"While some aid is being delivered, it remains insufficient to meet the urgent needs of the children and their families in Gaza. The resources allocated are merely a drop in the ocean compared to the massive and immediate requirements the children and their families face, particularly in accessing clean water," Oweis explained.

Oweis highlighted the scarcity of clean water in Gaza, compelling many families to resort to providing children with unclean, saline water. He expressed concerns over the health impacts, citing cases where children exposed to such water have developed symptoms of dehydration and diarrhea.

"The children are truly enduring the worst of times in Gaza. Whatever aid is being provided falls significantly short of meeting the pressing needs of the children," Oweis concluded, underlining the urgency for substantial and immediate assistance to alleviate the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
