The attacker, who has not been identified, tried to enter the shrine through the Bab al-Mahdi entrance but was met with resistance from security forces. He then opened fire indiscriminately, wounding several people before being subdued.

One person was killed in the attack and eight others were wounded. The wounded were taken to a local hospital for treatment.

This is not the first time Shah Cheragh has been targeted. In October, a previous attack led to the deaths of 13 individuals.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The attack has raised security concerns in Iran, which has been the target of several armed attacks in recent years.

The Shah Cheragh shrine is a significant pilgrimage site for Shia Muslims. It houses the tombs of two sons of the seventh Shia Imam Musa al-Kadhim, who are also siblings of the eighth Imam Ali al-Rida.

The attack on the shrine is a reminder of the ongoing threat of terrorism in Iran. The government has vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice. (ILKHA)
