The derailment occurred near Sarhari Railway Station in the Nawabshah area, as the train was traveling from Karachi to Rawalpindi.

Videos and images of the accident showed around 10 train cars overturned near a town in Sindh. The visuals depicted the harrowing scene of bodies scattered around as local residents made efforts to rescue the passengers trapped in the derailed train compartments.

Deputy Superintendent of Pakistan Railways, Mahmood Rehman, confirmed that at least 15 bodies had been recovered from the damaged train cars, while around 50 injured individuals were being rushed to nearby hospitals.

The cause of the derailment is still under investigation, but it is believed that the train may have hit a rock or other object on the tracks. Pakistan's rail system has been plagued by accidents due to its deteriorating infrastructure.

The government has been striving to secure funds to upgrade the rail network as part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, which is linked to China's Belt and Road Initiative for infrastructure development. (ILKHA)
