The data revealed a significant rise in credit card payments, totaling 515 billion liras, reflecting a remarkable 112% increase from the previous year. Debit card payments also witnessed an astounding growth, amounting to 113.2 billion liras, which represented a jaw-dropping 1,000% increase compared to the same period last year.
Prepaid card transactions showed noteworthy growth as well, reaching 10.6 billion liras in June, marking an impressive 98% increase year-on-year.
The total number of credit, debit, and prepaid card transactions grew by 25%, reaching a record 1.3 billion in June. Among these transactions, credit cards accounted for 736 million, while debit cards contributed 510 million.
In response to the surging card usage, the Banking Supervision and Regulation Agency (BDDK) recently introduced measures to curb credit card usage. The new decision disallows installment payments for foreign travel expenses, including flights, travel agency fees, and accommodation.
As of June, Türkiye had 108.3 million credit cards in circulation, representing a notable 19% increase. The number of debit cards also rose by 13%, totaling 179 million, while prepaid cards saw a substantial 25% surge, reaching a total of 79.8 million cards in active use. (ILKHA)
