Türkiye's new Chief of General Staff appointed after Supreme Military Council meeting

Lieutenant General Metin Gürak has been appointed as the new Chief of General Staff for Türkiye following a series of decisions announced after the closed-door meeting of the Supreme Military Council (YAŞ) on Thursday.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan chaired the meeting, which is known for setting the military agenda and making crucial staffing decisions that are subsequently approved by the President.

Major General Selçuk Bayraktaroğlu has been assigned as the new Commander of the Land Forces, and Major General Ziya Cemal Kadıoğlu will take the helm as the new Commander of the Air Force.

During the YAŞ meeting, held to address promotions, dismissals, and other critical matters in Türkiye's military, the decision was made to promote 32 generals and admirals to higher ranks. Additionally, 63 colonels have been elevated to the esteemed positions of general and admiral.

The appointments and promotions will take effect as of August 30, 2023, leading to an increase in the number of generals and admirals within the Turkish Armed Forces from the current count of 266 to 286, according to the official statement released after the meeting.

These decisions mark a significant development in Türkiye's military leadership and signify the country's commitment to maintaining a robust and effective command structure to safeguard national security amid evolving regional challenges. (ILKHA)
