Erdogan responds to Biden's gratitude for dropping opposition to Sweden's NATO membership

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan took to Twitter on Wednesday to respond directly to a tweet by US President Joe Biden, who expressed gratitude for Erdogan's decision to drop opposition to Sweden's entry into NATO.

Erdogan emphasized Türkiye's unwavering support for NATO's expansion and the strengthening of the alliance, stating: "We will continue to support NATO's growth and foster stronger ties among allies, approaching these efforts with sincerity, a sense of responsibility, and principled principles."

He further expressed his belief that a robust alliance capable of addressing security challenges, particularly in counterterrorism, and enhancing cooperation among allies, will play a pivotal role in establishing regional and global peace.

Erdogan assured that Türkiye would maintain a constructive stance as long as its legitimate security concerns, as well as regional and global initiatives based on mutual benefit, are duly considered. He extended his appreciation to President Biden for the personal support, well wishes, and commendations regarding the Alliance.

President Biden shared a compilation video of his meeting with President Erdogan on his own Twitter account, acknowledging Türkiye's historic agreement on Sweden's NATO membership. Biden expressed gratitude to Erdogan for demonstrating courage, leadership, and diplomatic skills. He underlined that the summit reaffirms the commitment to NATO's defense, expressing hopes for further strengthening of the alliance.

The summit, which brought together the leaders of the 31-member military alliance, took place in Vilnius, Lithuania, focusing on discussions regarding the Ukraine war, Sweden's NATO membership, and measures to bolster the group's defense capabilities and deterrence, among other important matters.
