Turkish presidential election run-off concludes with potential extension of Erdogan's rule

With over 61 million people participating, the outcome of the election has the potential to extend Erdogan's rule into a third decade.

Polling stations across the country closed at 5 p.m. local time following their opening at 8 a.m. As compared to the previous round, reports suggest that the polling stations experienced a relatively quieter atmosphere, with a turnout of 89% observed earlier.

The anticipation is that the broadcast ban on announcing results will be lifted by 6:30 p.m. local time, allowing for the release of results earlier than the previous election held on May 14.

During the initial round, 69-year-old Erdogan surpassed expectations by securing an almost five-point lead over his rival, Kemal Kilicdaroglu.

However, he narrowly missed the 50% threshold required to avoid a run-off. The outcome of this election holds significant implications not only for Turkey but also for global geopolitics.
