Turkmenistan holds parliamentary elections

About 3.5 million voters have started voting in parliamentary elections to elect 125 deputies of the Mejlis (Parliament) as well as members of people's councils of regions, districts, and cities.

Polling centers opened at seven am (0200 GMT) and will close at seven pm (1400 GMT), according to local sources.

Voting is being held in 2,644 ballot boxes across the country and 42 ballot boxes have been set up in Turkmenistan's diplomatic missions abroad.

The elections take place three years after a return to bicameralism.

The first elections for the new upper house, the People's Council of Turkmenistan, were held in 2021. (ILKHA)
