“Since the beginning of December, the number of weekly reported deaths from COVID-19 has been increasing,” Ghebreyesus told journalists during his regular weekly press conference.

“In total, in the past eight weeks, more than 170 thousand people have died of COVID-19. That’s just reported deaths; the actual number of deaths is much higher,” he added.

About 7 million confirmed COVID-induced deaths have been reported worldwide, according to World Health Organization.

As of January 2023, taking into account likely COVID-induced deaths via excess deaths, the 95% confidence interval suggests the pandemic to have caused between 16 and 28.2 million deaths. (ILKHA)
