About 1,000 people killed in Malawi cholera outbreak

Malawi reported 30 more deaths from cholera, bringing the outbreak’s death toll to 990 in the country.

“The new deaths are from Lilongwe nine, Mangochi eight, Balaka five, Blantyre three, Salima two and one each for Chiradzulu, Machinga and Dedza,” the health ministry said.

The ministry noted that a total number of cholera cases stood at 29 995 with case fatality rate at 3.30 percent and 1 069 patients in the treatments centers.

On 3 March 2022, the Ministry of Health Malawi declared a cholera outbreak in the country, following confirmation of a case in a 57-year-old male, from Machinga district, in Southern Malawi.

Since then, several response measures have been implemented including delivery of cholera kits, mapping of hotspot districts in a bit to contain the spread of the outbreak. (ILKHA)
