According to local officials, the accident involved a passenger bus and a trailer on the Kwali-Abaji expressway.

The main cause of the crash was excess speed and fatigue, the Federal Road Safety Corps Spokesperson, Bisi Kazeem, said in a statement.

The injured were transferred to Abaji General Hospital for immediate medical care, while the deceased remains were placed at the mortuary, the official said.

Road accidents are common on Nigeria’s poorly maintained roads mostly due to speeding and disregard for traffic rules.

According to figures by the road safety commission, Nigeria recorded 10,637 road accidents last year, which claimed 5,101 lives and injured more than 30,000 people. (ILKHA)
